photography by Tara @ XXI

Prep Time: 2-3 min | Total Time: less than 10 minutes | Servings: 1
(because unless they chipped in on groceries, you should only be cooking for one)

What You Need:

2 Slices of White Bread
1 Cap Full of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 Spoon Fulls of Butter
Parsley Flakes
Garlic Powder
Grill Brush
Cooling Rack or Baking Sheet

How To Make It:

Preheat oven to 400°F. We used a cooling rack ( our baking sheet was destroyed ) but you can use a baking sheet, baking pan, whatever. You're going to cover whatever you choose to use with foil. Meanwhile, you're going to grab a bowl (something microwavable safe) and mix butter, olive oil, and garlic powder & parsley to taste. Microwave butter mixture for about 30-40 seconds. Your butter may not be completely melted, but take your grill brush and blend the ingredients until better is fully melted.

Grab one or two slices of bread and place them on your cooling rack. Proceed to butter each slice with the grill brush. Make sure each slice gets FULL coverage for maximum taste. You may lightly butter the backs of each slice, but this step is not necessary.

Place buttered slices in oven for 3 mins before flipping to the reverse side. Let slices bake for about 3 more minutes or until a light golden brown before removing.
*cooking times may vary

Finally, plate & enjoy!

introducing...

I've finally succumb to the pressures of my twitter friends and joined the world of the tumblrs.

"You CANNOT Act Wisely, Unless You Are Informed Wisely."

Sometimes I'm forwarded some quality e-mails from either my mom, a friend's mom or some co-workers. Today I was educated on the marketing term "NUD." NUD stands for Non Urban Dictate. It was stated to be a "little known" marketing term that is used in reference to people of color. In essence, the use of the term is applied when companies are not interested in marketing to people of color. Therefore, avoiding markets that consist of a majority color audience or a dense population of people of color.

All the reasons as to why this occurs may not be for discriminatory reasons, some others reasons were that, "blacks don't index high in certain categories or that a company's strategy is to market to the black consumer down the road after they've established a strong position in their primary target." However, the fact that a term such as this does exist, does tend to raise some flags of concern. Some companies are stated to use this as a "theory" rather than a policy to avoid the bad press of being a discriminatory company. But, given this information, I feel that us people of color should take into consideration all factors regarding this issue and carefully consider with whom we choose to support financially.

A list of companies were included in the e-mail, but after doing further research on the issue, I found that the alleged group behind this list, The Urban Institute, released a statement in 2002 stating that they are "not in any way associated with the purported research or with any supposed list of companies with NUDs, and never was." I decided to leave it up to you whether you'd like to take this issue further and do some outside investigation. However, regardless of the authenticity of the list, policies such as this do exist and some companies actually do have descriminatory practices they follow. I believe it is important that we as a community make informed decisions on our own, before waiting for our favorite rapper, actress, etc. to boycott products or companies before taking action.

Website Spotlight: Issuu.com

Zines have been elevated to the next level. Hundreds of privately owned Zines, Magazines, and other publications are being hosted at Issuu.com. Issuu allows users to upload material such as books, magazines, portfolios and other traditionally printed material. Although, Issuu is designed for viewing these items online, if you tend to lean towards the traditional side you may also download or save these items as well.

Viewing online isn't as complicated as one may think. I mean, you can't leave post-its, make markings or bend pages to review later but with the animated page flipping and zoom capabilities it's quite an enjoyable experience.

The only drawback, if you'd call it that, is that these are not well known published magazines like Nylon or Blender. However, if those are more your cup of tea you can try Zinio.com. But, the cost per digitial issue is pretty much the same price you'd pay for the hard copy, so unless you're into saving trees that may not be the best option.
